In this simulation we’re showing few possibilities and options what the attacker can do, and how the defender can respond. The first is that the attacker dropped, took down, the defender. Immediately after following down, and executing the break fall, the counterattacks are with kicks towards the vulnerable areas. Obviously, one has to convert the body actions from the break fall to the turning, and this will be done as soon as possible. These skills have been taught earlier in our curriculum.

Now the attacker is more efficient, he took the defender down. He took the defender down, and now he is trying to kick him, to stomp on him. The defender turned and now he sees the attacker approaching and trying to stomp. The angle from which the kick is coming is dictating an outside forearm defense to deflect it, but a defense being done at the same time counterattack as soon as possible. So, we see hand defense, body defense and early counterattacks with the kicks. Defender, getting up and moving away or getting up and continuing with multiple counterattacks.

In this simulation, the attacker threw the defender down, with this shoulder push take down, and immediately is climbing on him and choking him. The defender didn’t manage to turn, so now the situation is dealing with a choke. This choke release has been taught earlier, and the whole idea in this whole sequence of drills is that the defender will be able to adapt his responses, identify the problem, identify the changing of actions with the opponent, and deal with them. Always giving the best solution, the most appropriate one, which will include all the possible ingredients. Including, hand defenses body defense, of course the break fall. We’re limited from action to the releases, always try to foresee the problem and prevent it, and if you cannot, then deal with it.

This simulation is dealing with a sitting position, and two attackers are approaching. Every time they can different types of problems. We chose here to show an earlier solution dealing with the approaching attackers. The chair is being thrown to disturb one attacker from actions. While doing this the defender is moving towards the other attacker, dealing with the knife attack, defending with the forearm against the upcoming underhand knife attack, what we call oriental stab. Continuing with the defense with the other hand, horizontal elbow strike and more kicks to neutralize the attacker, as soon as possible move away from the danger zone. The first attacker that was disturbed by the chair, stopped his actions this moment. Moving away from the danger zone was rapid, and it seems that the using of the chair was efficient enough to stop and to deal with the first attacker. Naturally in many cases, when one attacker sees that his friend is being hit, he doesn’t continue as he loses his fighting and attacking spirit.

In this variation, the first attacker managed to attack and is attacking with a roundhouse kick towards the head of the seated defender. At the same time, the other attacker is approaching with the knife. So, here the example is defending, and if possible counterattacking, against the first attacker and immediately moving towards the second attacker. By moving towards the second attacker we defending and counterattacking, you naturally remove yourself from the area closer to the first attacker. Practically we’re utilizing here, the basic principles of defending kicks and knives, starting from a seated position, and how to get up from a chair, and the principles of dealing with multiple attackers.

The first attacker was not really neutralized in some cases, so in this example he’s using the chair that the defender just got up from. The defender now has to confront the attacker that’s changed his actions, using a tool, a common object that he picked up. So, when the chair is going towards the defender, the defender is sweeping the chair to the side, practically doing defenses with the hands, and with the body. Moving away from the area of the attack while deflecting the attack itself, then controlling and counterattacking. Overall, this simulation was composed of different techniques and different tactics. The techniques were against the kick, against the knife, against the chair, how to get up from a chair, these were some of the technical aspects. The tactical aspects is how and when to respond against which attacker, and naturally the tactical moves in the finishing move.

A. Attacks

  1. Roundhouse punch directed diagonally and downward.
  2. Chop strikes: inward chop (palm up), downward chop, outward chop (palm down).

B. Defenses Against Elbow Strikes (using previous principles and techniques)

  1. Against an horizontal elbow strike - with forearm and palm./li>
  2. Against a vertical elbow strike – inside defense with forearm, elbow forward.

C. Defenses Against Attacks With a Stone

  1. Against an overhead or diagonally downward attack - use stabbing defense.
  2. Against an attack from the front (straight) - inside sweeping defense.

D. Escaping Various Grabs and Holds (Defender Throws Attacker)

  1. Escaping a pushing bear hug from behind, arms free.
  2. Escaping a pushing bear hug from behind, arms trapped.
  3. Escaping a pushing, low bear hug from the front, arms free - roll backward.
  4. Escaping a headlock from the side - attacker takes down – spinning inward.
  5. Escaping a headlock from the side - attacker puts leverage on the neck – backward.
  6. Escaping an arm bar with arm bent backward - bend, send opposite leg backward.

Note: In techniques 1-3, the attacker has slammed into the defender.

E. Ground Fighting – Attacking while on the Ground (end in a standing position)

Required attacks and actions are: all relevant types of striking and kicking; locking fingers; grab and press; shouting; trapping and limiting hands of opponent. Finish by getting up.

  1. Attacking from the mount (on top) position – when on or under.
  2. Attacking from the cross-mount position – when on or under.
  3. Attacking in the guard position – when in or under.

F. Defense Against a Rifle / Long Gun Threat

  1. Rifle threat from the front – inside defense, grabs and lift weapon - to live and dead side.
  2. Rifle threat from behind - trap with both hands - to the live and dead side.
  3. Rifle threat from the side, high/low – outside defenses and trap with both hands.

G. Defenses Against Circular or Straight Knife Attacks - In a Seated Position

  1. From long range, attacker starts in front of the defender or at his side – use the chair or kick (supported lifting body) - attacker can approach from all directions.
  2. Hand defenses - attacker can approach from all directions.

H. Defense Against Knife Attacks on the Ground - Lying Down (Face-Up)

Standing op

  1. Standing opponent, coming from the side, with a downward stab.
  2. Opponent sitting on defender, attempting a downward stab.

I. Rhythm and Pacing - as an Attacker, as a Defender - Including Fighting Drills

  1. Rhythm with two or more attacks/moves - no connection, natural, broken, shattered and simultaneous. Practice in place and while advancing.
  2. Practice defenses against combinations of attacks executed at different paces and rhythms.
  3. Practice fighting games and light fighting.

J. Dealing with a Continuous Attacker – Whilst Executing Previously learnt Knife Defenses
Attacker launches attack during counteraction that the defender is doing against the first one.

K. Simulations of Real-Life Situations/Scenarios

  1. After falling or being thrown or taken to the ground, dealing with a standing or a tight (controlling) attacker.
  2. Two attackers approach a Seated Defender. Dealing with Kicks and Knife Attacks.
